The 80% Use of Time
School Counselors should be spending 80% of their work time in direct and indirect services to the students with the remaining 20% being dispersed among the other three components.
Administrators, teachers, parents, and community members need to be familiar with the duties, responsibilities, and expectations that are the purview of the school counselor. It is in the best interest of the students that their school counselors be allowed to meet the 80% use of time guideline. It is what the school counselor is trained and allegedly hired to do, and schools where it is most closely met enjoy the benefits of their successful school counseling program.
I wilI track my use of time using the ASCA Use of Time document in an effort to put my time and energy where it is most beneficial and most needed----direct and indirect services to our students. Circumstances are not always our friend, and there are never enough hours in the day, but we keep the 80% Gold Standard always before us in the interest of your students.
