Confidentiality and the School Counselor
Rules of Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a critical component of the ethics of a school counselor. It is sacred to the trust between the school counselor and the student. Therefore, what is shared with the school counselor stays with the school counselor. I respect the privacy and autonomy of my students to the fullest extent possible; however, if one of the following is true, the limits of confidentiality have been reached:
Someone is hurting you, my student;
You, my student, want to hurt someone else or yourself.
These situations require me to report them.
Students may also give me permission to share with another adult whom they consider to be a trusted ally.
Parents for whom confidentiality is a concern may visit with the school counselor personally about their concerns. See the Parent Access page.
