The ASCA National Model for a School Counseling Program
The Four Components of the Model
Define
School Counseling is defined by three sets of standards: the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success, the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors, and the ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards and Competencies.
Manage
An efficiently and effectively managed school counseling program demonstrates focus and planning.
Deliver
School counselors deliver both direct and indirect services to their students. Direct services are developmentally appropriate activities the school counselors delivers through instruction, appraisal, advisement, and counseling. Indirect services results from the school counselor consulting, collaborating, and referring with others on behalf of the students.
Assess
Effective school counselors evaluate themselves and their programs to determine whether or not the services they have provided have proven beneficial, how those services can be improved, and how the students have been impacted by those services.
